This innovative program addresses critical environmental issues in the fashion and construction industries and the Circular Innovation Lab is proud to be part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) UNEP Programme: an Integrated Programme (IP) on Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Supply Chains. The GEF also partners with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The program represents an ambitious approach to address these industries' environmental and social impacts, fostering innovative, sustainable supply chain solutions and circular business models. The initiative hopes to deliver a step-change in positive global environmental impacts through substitution with regenerative and more transparent approaches for resource-intensive methods and materials.

Inclusive of nine national projects in developing countries across Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, with a global coordination project led by UNEP, countries include Cambodia, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago. The IP will deliver transformative outcomes across the value chains of both sectors. By fostering collaboration between designers, manufacturers, buyers, consumers and retailers, the program seeks to create a sustainable future for the fashion and construction industries while addressing social inequality and environmental degradation. This translates to reduced GHG emissions, ecosystem restoration and better livelihoods for millions around the globe.

Objective

The program aims to transform the fashion and construction value chains by reducing resource-intensive and environmentally damaging practices. It introduces sustainable, circular and transparent supply chain approaches to mitigate biodiversity loss, pollution, climate change, and resource depletion. By prioritizing innovation and sustainability, the initiative aims to eliminate harmful chemical use, lower greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the adoption of resource-efficient production methods.
